The role

You will work across all our different projects (mainly Independent Living, Horticulture, Digital Skills and My Community and Me) to support our students (adults with learning disabilities and/or autism), to achieve their goals. You’ll support the delivery of sessions both in our classrooms and also out in the community. You'll provide one-to-one support to students to ensure full inclusivity and enjoyment by everyone. You will enable students to develop their skills, be able to better manage new or challenging social situations and live healthier and more fulfilled lives.

Our ideal candidate would have experience of working within a social care, health or support worker role, with adults with learning disabilities and autism. You’ll have a strong commitment to the inclusion of disabled people in all aspects of life. You’ll need to be an energetic people person, be able to follow instructions whilst being able to use your initiative to problem solve and think on your feet.

Job Description

  • Provide support within our Horticulture, Independent Living, Digital Skills and My Community and Me projects. Occasionally supporting our other projects such as Basic Skills and Catering.
  • Provide one-to-one support for students who may have more complex needs
  • Support the running of community based activities ensuring they run smoothly, students enjoy their day and stay safe throughout
  • Work with the team to ensure that student’s individual goals around independence and wellbeing are being achieved
  • Support the Wellbeing team with providing pastoral support to students as and when required
  • Promote effective communication and relationships amongst members and to be aware of communication and personality differences
  • Work at all times within a framework of equality of opportunity and in a way that values each student
  • Undertake any other tasks as may be reasonably required.

Person Specification

  1. Experience of working within social care and providing services directly to adults with learning disabilities and autism
  2. Experience and enjoyment of working in busy and varied environment
  3. Excellent verbal communication skills
  4. Great listening skills, with high levels of warmth, empathy and resilience
  5. Able to inspire trust and confidence, behaving with integrity and honesty at all times
  6. Passionate about social inclusion and particularly about helping disabled people to reach their potential and shine
  7. Strong team-player, who enjoys working alongside others to achieve goals
  8. Personal flexibility and the ability to work in a way that is adaptable, reliable and focused on the needs of each individual
  9. Able to solve problems creatively, explore options and manage demanding or tricky situations

Desirable

  1. Able to use Makaton
  2. First Aid certificate
